Referee
Development
The
BCIHA works closely with its Member Leagues and the NIHA-Canada
to further the development of the referees across the province and
around the country. The NIHA-Canada Referee program has been designed
to promote safety in the game for the players and officials and
consistency of rules emphasis and enforcement in all leagues.
NIHA-Canada
Referee Development includes:
1)
Referee
Leadership Seminar - all League
Referee-in-Chiefs attend this seminar lead by the National RIC.
Attending the Leadership Seminar are the Referees-in-Chief of each
member league.
Through this process, the NIHA-Canada is able to maintain consistency
of rule emphasis, enforcement and discipline across the national
level.
2)
Referee Certification Clinic: Referee Certification is an annual
process for all of the NIHA-Canada officials. This process begins
with a 1-day Certification Clinic. The Certification Clinic consists
of a Classroom Session (4-5 hours) and a Rink Session (1 hour).
This Clinic will cover Rules, Procedures, Safety, Risk Management,
Signals, Harassment and an Examination.
3)
Referee Recognition and Selection Program: Becoming an Official
is just part of the NIHA-Canada Officials Program.
The NIHA-Canada has created a Recognition and Selection Program
for its Officials across the country. This Program is designed to
encourage, recognize, develop and reward Officials in the different
leagues.
The Recognition Program will award points to Officials each year
based on criteria established by the National Officials Committee
headed by the National Referee-in-Chief, Dan Duffy.
These points will accumulate each year and will be the basis for
Selection to different events including the Regional Tournaments,
National Events and International Championships (IIHF World Championships).
In
addition to the Points System, review by the Official's Supervisors
will also be used to determine eligibility and ability for these
elite events.
