SARDIS FALCONS ~ 2007 High School Champions

June 7 , 2007 - For Immediate Release

Langley, B.C. - BACK-TO-BACK!

The Sardis Falcons from Chilliwack have successfully defended their BC High School Roller Hockey Championship with a 5-4 victory over the Walnut Grove Gators (Langley) in the Championship Game.

After 3 years of near misses at the tournament, Sardis now becomes just the second team to capture back-to-back High School Titles. Belmont Braves (Victoria) won the tournament in each of its first two years.

With a roster full of WHL, Jr A, Jr. B, and Major Midget League players, Sardis entered the tournament with a strong combination of skill and experience.

However, it was a couple of Langley schools that surprised the Sardis team with their work ethic and determination against the bigger and strong Chilliwack players. Mountain Eagles fought back from a 3-0 deficit to tie the Falcons in the round robin before falling 4-3 on a late Sardis goal.

Walnut Grove Gators came out firing in the final round robin game and were able to take a 5-5 tie with Sardis and gain the #1 seed going into the playoffs.

South Delta and Lambrick Park entered the tournament with relatively inexperienced squads. Despite competing hard each game, both teams struggled to the 4th and 5th place positions.

In the playoff round, the experience of the Sardis team paid off as they were able to hold off a valiant effort from the Mountain team in the semifinals. The Championship game between Walnut Grove and Sardis picked up right where their 5-5 round robin game left off. Both teams kept it close throughout the game, before Sardis was able to pull ahead for good.

NOTES:

  • Lambrick Park was the lone squad to make the trip from Victoria
  • Sardis is the only school to compete in every BC High School Tournament.
  • This was the first year that a Victoria school did not reach the final.
  • Walnut Grove and Lambrick Park competed for the 4th time in 5 years
  • Mountain made their 1st ever entry into the tournament
