May
24 , 2006 - For Immediate Release
Langley,
B.C. - After 3 years of loading up their roster and falling short,
the Sardis Falcons from Chilliwack have reached the pinnacle of
BC High School Roller Hockey - the top team in BC!
The
2006 BC High School Tournament was played May 19-20th at the Langley
Sportsplex and featured teams from Belmont (Victoria), Windsor (North
Vancouver), Walnut Grove (Langley) and Sardis.
The
teams were all eager to get started and claim the championship banner
to take back to their school gym.
Friday
games started with teams testing each other out. Walnut Grove overcame
a late deficit to score with mere seconds on the clock and gain
a 5-5 tie with Windsor in the opener. The 2nd game proved much of
the same as Belmont and Sardis engaged in a close battle with Belmont
taking a 5-3 victory.
Saturday
opened with an upset victory by Walnut Grove over Belmont by a 5-3
score. Sardis got into the Win column with a convincing 8-1 victory
over Windsor. This took us into the afternoon games with playoff
positions on the line.
Sardis
and Belmont stepped up with solid victories over Walnut Grove and
Windsor respectively and the playoffs were set. Belmont claimed
the #1 seed and a bye into the Championship Game. Sardis finished
2nd and set up a rematch with Walnut Grove in the Semifinal.
Sardis
came out flying again and proved too much for the younger Walnut
Grove team with an 8-2 victory.
The
Final proved a rematch of the 2004 High School Championship in Victoria
when Belmont beat Sardis for their 2nd consecutive Title. This year
proved a different result however, as Sardis was geared up for the
Final game and jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in the first 15 seconds
of the game.
Belmont
answered 45 seconds later to even the score at 1-1. Two Sardis goals
midway through the 1st period held up to leave the score 3-1 at
the half. In the 2nd half, the Sardis powerplay clicked 3 times
while their penalty kill went a perfect 3-3 and Sardis claimed the
2006 title with a 6-1 victory.
